Passive Voice

Passive Voice pronouns are used when the subject of the verb (I, you, he, etc.) is being acted on but the actor (or agent) isn't necessarily specified. The column on the left shows a full list. 
The following are some example verbs using Passive Pronouns in the Present Tense. Note that if the actor/agent is specified, Set B pronouns will be used. For a much fuller discussion on this topic, see Sections 9.4 and 9.5 in Cherokee Reference Grammar by Brad Montgomery-Anderson (2015).

Note! The 3rd person singular form undergoes a change from /atsi-/ to /ag-/ before vowels.

Root verb -woni-

ᎥᎩᏬᏂᎭ - vgi-woni-ha - I am being spoken to.

ᎡᏣᏬᏂᎭ - etsa-woni-ha - you are being spoken to.

ᎠᏥᏬᏂᎭ - atsi-woni-ha - s/he/it is being spoken to.

ᎡᎩᏂᏬᏂᎭ - egini-woni-ha - the two of us are being spoken to.

ᎡᏍᏗᏬᏂᎭ - esdi-woni-ha - the two of you are being spoken to.

ᎣᎩᏂᏬᏂᎭ - ogini-woni-ha - the two of us (not you) are being spoken to.

ᎡᎩᏬᏂᎭ - egi-woni-ha - all of us are being spoken to.

ᎣᎩᏬᏂᎭ - ogi-woni-ha - all of us (they & I) are being spoken to.

ᎡᏥᏬᏂᎭ - etsi-woni-ha - you are all being spoken to.

ᎨᏥᏬᏂᎭ - getsi-woni-ha - they are being spoken to.



Root verb -go(wa)ti-

ᎥᎩᎪᏩᏘᎭ - vgi-go(wa)ti-ha - I am being seen.

ᎡᏣᎪᏩᏘᎭ- etsa-go(wa)ti-ha - you are being seen.

ᎠᏥᎪᏩᏘᎭ - atsi-go(wa)ti-ha - s/he/it is being seen.

ᎡᎩᏂᎪᏩᏘᎭ - egini-go(wa)ti-ha - the two of us are being seen.

ᎡᏍᏗᎪᏩᏘᎭ - esdi-go(wa)ti-ha - the two of you are being seen.

ᎣᎩᏂᎪᏩᏘᎭ - ogini-go(wa)ti-ha - the two of us (not you) are being seen.

ᎡᏦᎵᎦ - ets-oli:-ga - you are being understood.

ᎡᏣᏃᎮᎭ - etsa-nohe-ha - you are being told.
